Ages and Stages
The International department is a part of the school which is growing and changing. We have not yet reached a full complement of 11 classes. However the ages at which students join the different year groups are standard for International (both IB and CIE) and UK schools. Ages are calculated according to the school year rather than the calendar year. Thus to join the year 1 class, students MUST be 5 years old before 1st September in the year they start school.
For the school year 2011/2012 we have 8 classes in the International department. This means some of our classes have two year groups. You can see this on the diagram below. As the department grows, the number of classes with two year groups reduces.
As many of our students have English as a second language and others come from different educational systems, we always have a wider range of ages than the 'core' age for each year group. In the case of children who join a year group with a core age lower than their chronological age, parents should be aware that these children will be older when they finish the exam programme.
We only promote children to skip a year on the agreement of all teachers in the core subjects.
